La proa ostenta el s\u00edmbolo de la compa\u00f1\u00eda, un elefante volador.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>WAAC se constituy\u00f3 tras la segunda guerra mundial para organizar el servicio de transporte a\u00e9reo civil en el \u00c1frica Occidental Brit\u00e1nica, formada por las colonias de Gambia, Sierra Leona, Costa de Oro (actualmente Ghana) y Nigeria. Adem\u00e1s de asegurar los enlaces internos, conectaba con el mundo exterior a trav\u00e9s de Dakar y Jartum, donde enlazaba con rutas de Air France y BOAC. M\u00e1s tarde organiz\u00f3 un vuelo directo Lagos &#8211; Londres, utilizando el enorme Boeing Stratocruiser.<\/p>\n<p>Al principio el 100% de la clientela de WAAC eran funcionarios del gobierno, pero pronto se vieron superados en n\u00famero por hombres de negocios en sus recorridos por \u00abThe Coast\u00bb. A la vuelta de 1950 la compa\u00f1\u00eda comenz\u00f3 a pensar en un tercer sector de p\u00fablico, los naturales del lugar, que por entonces ya estaban completamente \u00abair -minded\u00bb . Utilizando los Bristol Freighter como autobuses a\u00e9reos con hasta 56 plazas (lo que dejaba un espacio para las rodillas similar al de un autob\u00fas de Londres) y eliminando toda clase de goller\u00edas como el servicio a bordo, WAAC organiz\u00f3 as\u00ed una aut\u00e9ntica low cost colonial medio siglo antes que Ryanair o Easyjet. As\u00ed lo describi\u00f3 Flight en 1951:<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl a\u00f1o pasado W.A.A.C. introdujo algunos servicios de segunda clase, utilizando Bristol Freighters con asientos austeros con tarifas considerablemente reducidas, para el beneficio de la poblaci\u00f3n africana &#8230; no hay lujos \u2013como camareros sirviendo refrigerios\u2013 como los que se encuentran en los servicios de primera clase.
