Vol\u00f3 por primera vez en 1954 y se vendieron varios cientos de ejemplares a la USAF y otras fuerzas a\u00e9reas. Funcionaba como un robusto avi\u00f3n de carga casi STOL, capaz de llevar diez toneladas de material a pistas sin apenas preparaci\u00f3n. Empero la fama de este avi\u00f3n se debe sobre todo a su empleo intensivo en la aspersi\u00f3n de defoliantes sobre Camboya, Laos y sobre todo Vietnam del Sur.<\/p>\n<p>El balance final de Ranch Hand fueron 70 millones de litros de herbicidas vertidos (agente naranja para toda la vegetaci\u00f3n, azul para los cultivos y blanco para los bosques) que arrasaron unos 26.000 km cuadrados, generalmente en zonas de densa poblaci\u00f3n (1). Cada avi\u00f3n llevaba unos 4.000 litros de l\u00edquido t\u00f3xico, que se dispersaba sobre la vegetaci\u00f3n mediante aspersores situados bajo las alas y en la cola.
