El dise\u00f1o tricolor est\u00e1 inspirado en la bandera de la Rep\u00fablica francesa. El color verde refleja la tradici\u00f3n cat\u00f3lica y ga\u00e9lica, el naranja el orangismo protestante e ingl\u00e9s y la franja blanca intermedia la paz entre ambas culturas o bien, m\u00e1s c\u00ednicamente, un foso de separaci\u00f3n para que no lleguen a las manos.<\/p>\n<p>Tras firma del tratado, que dejaba a los seis condados del Ulster bajo el yugo brit\u00e1nico, estall\u00f3 una guerra civil entre los pro-tratado y anti-tratado en la que una de las primeras v\u00edctimas fue el propio Michael Collins. El Ej\u00e9rcito Nacional o del Estado Libre ten\u00eda unos pocos aviones, principalmente DH.9 y Bristol Fighter.
