Hac\u00eda mucho fr\u00edo, y se esperaban fuertes vientos y nieve en la primera parte del viaje. A bordo iba Sir Samuel Hoare, Secretario de Estado para el Aire, y su se\u00f1ora, Lady Maud. El rey Jorge hab\u00eda enviado un telegrama deseando bon voyage a la pareja, y no era para menos, pues se trataba de inaugurar la primera Ruta A\u00e9rea Imperial Londres &#8211; Karachi, la primicia de \u201cuna cadena de rutas imperiales que unir\u00edan los diversos dominios con la Madre Patria (1)\u201d. La autonom\u00eda del Hercules, un robusto biplano trimotor, era tan corta que necesit\u00f3 seis etapas para llegar a Khoms en la costa de Libia, la Leptis Magna romana. Desde ah\u00ed, Bengasi, Sollum (ya en Egipto), Abukir (junto a Alejandr\u00eda, donde ocurri\u00f3 la primera gran victoria de Nelson en 1798), Ziza (Gaza?), Rutbah Wells (Ar Rutbah, en el oeste de Irak), Bagdad y Basora. El viaje segu\u00eda luego por la l\u00ednea costera de Persia hasta Karachi. Esta primera ruta no hab\u00eda sido f\u00e1cil de trazar. Su tramo Cairo-Bagdad, por ejemplo, des\u00e9rtico en su mayor parte, hab\u00eda sido abierta para el tr\u00e1fico postal ya a comienzos de la d\u00e9cada de 1920, tras un laborioso proceso previo de identificaci\u00f3n de campos auxiliares y rumbos hecho en autom\u00f3viles, cuyas rodadas usaban a veces los aviadores para guiarse (2). La poca autonom\u00eda de los aviones disponible obligaba a un complejo sistema de etapas intermedias, algunas de las cuales deb\u00edan estar dotadas, adem\u00e1s de gasolina y servicios mec\u00e1nicos, de instalaciones para que los viajeros pudieran pasar la noche.
