El embargo era parte del boicot internacional al gobierno de Sud\u00e1frica provocado por la Declaraci\u00f3n de la ONU contra la discriminaci\u00f3n racial de 1963. Wilson tambi\u00e9n dijo que era la \u00faltima vez que Gran Breta\u00f1a vend\u00eda armas al r\u00e9gimen del apartheid. El premier sudafricano, Verwoerd, se congratul\u00f3 de la decisi\u00f3n y anunci\u00f3 que la marina brit\u00e1nica podr\u00eda seguir usando con tranquilidad la base naval de Cape Town. Hac\u00eda semanas que los pilotos sudafricanos se entrenaban \u00aben considerable secreto\u00bb (1) en la base del RNAS de Lossiemouth, en la costa noroeste de Escocia.<\/p>\n<p>La fuerza a\u00e9rea sudrafricana no us\u00f3 mucho el Buccaneer en la guerra que manten\u00eda con la guerrilla del SWAPO y otras en sus pa\u00edses lim\u00edtrofes, salvo en ocasiones especiales. Una de estas ocasiones fue el ataque a\u00e9reo de Cassinga, el 4 de mayo de 1978. Fue una compleja operaci\u00f3n de la fuerza a\u00e9rea sudafricana destinada a aniquilar un campamento del SWAPO en el sur de Angola, 200 km de la frontera con Namibia. Primero se utilizaron cuatro Canberras para un bombardeo en alfombra con bombas de fragmentaci\u00f3n. Luego llegaron los cinco Buccaneers, con ocho bombas de casi media tonelada cada uno. Por fin cuatro Mirage III ametrallaron lo que hab\u00eda quedado tras los dos ataques precedentes, mientras que los Impalas prestaban apoyo a toda la operaci\u00f3n y cargueros Transall soltaban las unidades de paracaidistas.
