Este formidable avi\u00f3n de ataque gan\u00f3 el concurso de la Marina estadounidense de 1963 para sustituir al Skyhawk y pronto comenz\u00f3 a actuar en Vietnam. Como es habitual, paulatinamente fue pasando a las unidades a\u00e9reas de la Guardia Nacional, entre ellas la de Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>El <a href=\"https:\/\/aeropinakes.com\/wordpress\/1950\/10\/30\/thunderbolts-contra-la-republica-de-puerto-rico\/\">ataque de Jayuya<\/a> de 1950 \u2013cuando Thunderbolt de la PR ANG bombardearon una rebeli\u00f3n independentista portorrique\u00f1a\u2013 tuvo su revancha, en cierta forma, cuando guerrilleros del Ej\u00e9rcito Popular Boricua se infiltraron en la base A\u00e9rea Mu\u00f1iz de la PR ANG (cerca de San Juan) y consiguieron destruir diez A-7 Corsair, el 12 de enero de 1981. Fue un ataque t\u00edpico de la guerra a\u00e9rea colonial, parecido a las incursiones que hac\u00eda el Vietminh en las bases a\u00e9reas francesas de Indochina.<\/p>\n<p>Por esas fechas Puerto Rico ya no era oficialmente una colonia, pues en 1952 la isla fue proclamada oficialmente como Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, terminando as\u00ed 54 a\u00f1os de dominio directo norteamericano, al menos de iure.<\/p>\n<p>Pero muchos piensan que, de facto, la isla sigue siendo una colonia de los Estados Unidos. Los portorrique\u00f1os son ciudadanos de los EEUU, pero no pueden votar al Congreso ni en las elecciones presidenciales. No obstante, la autoridad suprema sobre la isla la tiene el Congreso de los Estados Unidos y la PR ANG (Puerto Rico Air National Guard) est\u00e1 decididamente unida a la estructura de la USAF. Sucesivas votaciones han mostrado que la opci\u00f3n de convertirse en Estado de la Uni\u00f3n ha ganado terreno \u00faltimamente a costa de la mayoritaria tradicional, seguir como Estado Libre Asociado.
