Selon <a href=\"http:\/\/aeropinakes.com\/wordpress\/archive\/el-extrano-modelo-colonial-weymann-type-66\/\"><em>Les ailes<\/em><\/a> et <a href=\"http:\/\/aeropinakes.com\/wordpress\/archive\/el-extrano-proyecto-colonial-weymann-type-66\/\"><em>Flight,<\/em><\/a> qui le mentionnen\u00a0au d\u00e9but de 1934, le W-66 est entr\u00e9 dans une sorte de clause ajout\u00e9 au concours de\u00a0 l&#8217;avion\u00a0colonial de 1930, qui a produit une douzaine de prototypes et un seul avion fabriqu\u00e9 en s\u00e9rie, le <a href=\"http:\/\/aeropinakes.com\/wordpress\/1937\/01\/08\/el-trimotor-colonial\/\">Bloch MB 120<\/a>. Contrairement \u00e0 ces derniers, le Weymann W-66 n&#8217;est pas un monoplan \u00e0 aile haute, mais un biplan, tr\u00e8s inspir\u00e9 par le Sikorsky S.38 et similaires.<\/p>\n<p>Selon le fabricant, le W-66 avait plusieurs advantages\u00a0sur ses concurrents. La configuration biplan assurait une bonne portance \u00e0 basse vitesse, et permit\u00a0une courte aile (16 m. de envergadure) utile pour servir, par exemple, dans les piste \u00e9troites de l&#8217;Afrique tropicale, ouverts en\u00a0milieu\u00a0de la jungle. Les trois moteurs (300 ch Algol r\u00e9glementaires qui ont utilis\u00e9 tous les participants au concours) sont\u00a0plac\u00e9s au-dessus et rapproch\u00e9s, afin de ne pas d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibrer l&#8217;avion en cas de d\u00e9faillance de l&#8217;un d&#8217;entre eux.<\/p>\n<p>Le train d&#8217;atterrissage, extr\u00eamement robuste, avait des freins sur les roues pour\u00a0permettre un freinage complet dans les pistes tr\u00e8s courtes et improvis\u00e9s qui devait\u00a0utiliser l&#8217;appareil.<br \/>\nLe travail colonial est\u00a0facilit\u00e9 par la nacelle spacieuse, enti\u00e8rement vitr\u00e9e, qui permet une visibilit\u00e9 sous tous les angles, m\u00eame avec la possibilit\u00e9 d&#8217;installer un \u00abbalcon d&#8217;observation\u00bb sur une trappe coulissante. Un autre pi\u00e8ge \u00e9tait pr\u00e9vu pour\u00a0placer un dispositif pour larguer des bombes ou de l&#8217;\u00e9quipement photographique. De grandes portes d&#8217;acc\u00e8s permettent le\u00a0mouvement des brancards.
